GARV toilets came into being with the idea of addressing issues plaguing the public/community toilet landscape in the developing world. Our team observed that most of the public/community toilet blocks in low-income communities which are made in a brick-and-mortar structures with ceramic sanitary fittings face issues like frequent vandalism, irregular maintenance, high operational expenditure, lack of basic facilities like water, electricity, ventilation inside the toilet. Every year billions of dollars are spent on new construction and renovation without much of an impact. We developed a toilet design which is essentially indestructible, integrated with new-age technology (RFID-IoT), is self-sustainable in terms of energy consumption, waste disposal and revenue generation. With all toilet blocks having solar power, LED lights, sufficient ventilation through exhaust fans, sanitary pad vending machines, ramp access, hand rails for disabled friendly toilets, overhead water tanks, bore wells, waste water recycling, we made sure that all basic requirements in a toilet are taken care of. We have a tried and tested operations model around pre-fabricated public toilets which has proven that with the integration of smart tech features (RFID- IoT devices), the project implementing agencies get a real-time update on usage of toilets, hygiene behaviour of users apart from the low operating costs due to minimised turn-around-time (TaT) by the operations team for maintenance activities. All these aspects ensure that communities have access to clean, well-maintained toilets 24×7, government partners are updated about usage patterns, hygiene behaviour of users and implementing partners rationalise their operational costs.
